Chris Kowula, Former Kuwaa Mission Director
Rev. Chris Kuwula passed away in 2017 due to a massive stroke. Chris was one of first members of the Kuwaa Mission and as Kuwaa person was deeply committed to serving his people. Chris was a gifted pastor, translator and personal friend to many of us on the Kuwaa board.
Rev. Chris served us our “Country Director” for the first several years of the mission and was instrumental in introducing us to his people upcountry, leading us on walking tours of the chiefdom, and educating us in the ways of his people.
He also had a gift for summing up any situation with a clever line about how the Kuwaa people would interpret the situation in their own vernacular, translated into English of course.
Rev. Chris left the Kuwaa Mission to take over the Lutheran Church in Liberia’s Literacy and Translation Center in Totota. Translation work was his first love and was taught by Rev. Dr. Richard Thompson, a LCMS missionary to the Kuwaa people in the 1980’s. Being fluent in several Liberian languages Rev. Chris worked hard to translate the Bible into the native languages the people in the villages could understand. Many still do not speak English!
Rev. Chris will be deeply missed by at least hundreds, if not thousands of people in Liberia and across the US. Please pray for support for his family. Our March newsletter will contain more information on this remarkable man.
The attached photos of Chris were taken by various KM people who traveled and knew Chris in Liberia.
