We are happy to inform you that although the rains have been heavy and traveling upcountry has been challenging, the Mission is going well! Thanks for your prayers. Here are a couple of updates about the work of the Kuwaa Mission: Medicine for the Clinic: You will recall that the Mission signed a drug-revolving funds agreement with the Christian Health Association of Liberia (CHAL) in December 2022. The terms of the deal were that CHAL would provide the clinic with high-quality medicines at a reasonable price, and the clinic would provide those medicines to patients for an affordable rate. Our fear that the Kondesu Clinic might disappoint us did not materialize! Although medicine sales have been slow at the clinic, the staff raised LD$ 64,000 (sixty-four thousand Liberian dollars) or $345.00 (three hundred and forty-five US dollars) toward the Drug Revolving Fund Program. This recent payment, the Mission’s first, is a cause for celebration! Without drugs, the clinic is of little or no use. The above amount qualifies the Kuwaa Mission to receive more drugs on loan from CHAL. We are delighted! The CHAL Leadership was pleased. The Talking Bible Project: I had hoped to be in Zorzor, Lofa County, sometime in July to launch the Proclaimer (The Talking Bible) Program. Unfortunately, the heavy rains and my other obligations in Monrovia did not permit it. We were in Zorzor last week for the purpose of meeting with the administration of the station and setting the program in motion. Although the meeting was held, I was not able to speak to the entire Kuwaa region directly as we had planned; that will be done when the transformer is up and running again. Using the Proclaimer, a device that contains a recording of the New Testament in the Kuwaa language, the Kuwaa Mission will reach the Kuwaa people with the Word of God every day of the week. The Proclaimer comes to us through the Kuwaa Mission’s partnership with the Bible Society of Liberia. The radio station in Zorzor, Radio Life (92.5 FM), which reaches the entire Kuwaa area, will broadcast a scriptural passage to the Kuwaa people every weekday. We are excited! Change in Staffing: We received the news a few weeks ago that the pastor of the Kuwaa Parish, Rev. Sumo Yarkpawolo Paye, who has worked with the Mission for many years and has become synonymous with the Mission, is being transferred to a parish in Monrovia. While we celebrate with the Parish that is blessed with an energetic pastor like Rev. Paye, we are saddened by this action. It is a big blow to the Mission. Rev. Paye has been the continued presence of the Mission to the Kuwaa people for over ten years. We celebrate the fact that God has blessed the Mission with some dedicated men and women like Stan, Cindy, and Chris in the past, but no one has been the face of the Mission for as many years as Rev. Paye has been. His transfer is a blow to the Mission. But while this change feels difficult, we also consider this situation part of God’s plan for the Mission. We were unaware, but evidently, the Lord has been preparing the Mission for such a thing as this for many years. With the help of the Mission’s partners, the Board has trained several men and women at the Lay Training Center in Totota from all over the district who can represent the Mission, at least temporarily. Rev. Paye has identified two people who have agreed to serve the Mission if asked. Joshua Courage Mulbah (left) of Kalata and Tebah Yarsiah (right) of Konjade, two of Rev. Paye’s trusted pals who travelled with him throughout the district, have agreed to serve in his stead until the Lutheran Church in Liberia sends a new pastor to succeed Paye. We have written the leadership of the Lutheran Church in Liberia, appealing for a quick successor to Paye. This situation is the Mission’s main prayer point for August. Prayer: God, we thank you for all that Rev. Paye has been to the Kuwaa Mission. As he goes to other parts of your church, continue to bless him and the ministry to which you have called him. We also ask, Lord, that you fill the vacuum he has left in the Kuwaa region with one with whom you are well pleased so that your Mission may continue to thrive. We pray in Jesus’ name. AMEN!
